Drottnar is an extreme metal band hailing from Fredrikstad, Norway. The group was formed in 1996 by the Lind brothers: vocalist Sven-Erik Lind, guitarist-keyboardist Karl Fredrik Lind, drummer Glenn-David Lind, and bassist Bjarne Peder Lind. Initially, they performed under the name Vitality and played a style rooted in death-doom metal.

In May 1996, as Vitality, they recorded their first demo, Doom of Antichrist, at X-Ray Studios. This was followed by another demo in 1997. In 1998, the band underwent a significant transformation, changing their name to Drottnar and shifting towards a Viking black metal style. That same year, they recorded the demo A White Realm.

In 2000, Drottnar compiled their earlier demos into an album titled Spiritual Battle, released by the UK-based label Plankton Records. The album was well-received, with Cross Rhythms Magazine praising its remastered tracks.

The following year, Drottnar contributed the track “Trellebaand Maa Briste” to the compilation album In the Shadow of Death, released by Swedish label Endtime Productions. Around this time, the band began incorporating militant elements into their image, such as wearing gas masks during live performances.

In 2003, they released the EP Anamorphosis through Norwegian label Momentum Scandinavia. Limited to 850 copies, this EP featured an intro and three songs, with the addition of violin parts enhancing its atmospheric depth. Prior to this release, bassist Bjarne Peder Lind departed from the band, leading to the inclusion of guitarist Bengt Olsson and bassist Håvar Wormdahl.

By 2005, Drottnar had signed with Endtime Productions and entered Subsonic Studios to work on new material. Their efforts culminated in the 2006 release of the album Welterwerk. To promote the album, they also issued a 7-inch vinyl single titled “Ad Hoc Revolt.” During this period, the band’s image evolved to feature early 20th-century military regalia, adding a distinctive visual element to their performances.

Drottnar has shared stages with notable bands such as Grimfist and Extol. In the summer of 2008, they embarked on a brief U.S. tour, performing at events like the Cornerstone Festival.

On February 1, 2009, the band announced they were recording a new album. The following day, they reported the departure of guitarist Bengt Olsson, though he rejoined the band later that year on August 12. After several years of recording, Drottnar released the single “Lucid Stratum” on November 8, 2011. Their next full-length album, Stratum, was released digitally on October 13, 2012, accompanied by a music video for the track “We March.”

Between 2017 and 2018, Drottnar released a trilogy of EPs: Monolith I, Monolith II, and Monolith III. These releases showcased a rawer and more experimental sound, receiving positive acclaim from fans. The trilogy was later compiled into the album Monolith, released in 2019.

Throughout their career, Drottnar has performed at notable festivals such as Sweden’s Endtime Fest, Norway’s Nordic Fest, the Netherlands’ Brainstorm Fest, Switzerland’s Elements of Rock, and Finland’s Immortal Metal Fest.

As of 2025, Drottnar continues to be an active and influential presence in the extreme metal scene, known for their technical proficiency, evolving musical style, and distinctive thematic elements.
